Well, NASA fired off her heavy lifter report to the committees yesterday. More updates when I actually get my hands on the report.
UPDATE: HEFT report is finally on the pub index. More accurately, a cover letter and the summary PowerPoint are up. God, NASA's doc management sucks.
What I've read so far it appears that NASA, who was all for the Senate plan, is now trying to weasel out of it saying they can't do it in the time frame required or the budget given. Are they deliberately trying allow SpaceX show them up?
ReplyDeleteSpaceX's 30 ton lifter's still on the drawing board, as are all the orbital components and LEGO payloads required by a competing strategy to heavy lift. Honestly, I prefer buying at fly away prices than buying the entire tool chain, but until we know more about the costs in the regime on-orbit activity I'm not ready to declare heavy lift dead.
ReplyDeleteI don't think heavy lift is dead yet either, but it will depend on this new Congress if they will slap NASA admin up side the head and make them heed.
